Organize Your Book Shelf Digitally With Shelfari.com

Posted in Corey Graham 2.0 & Caribbean & review & personal growth | 20:43

CG 2.0 Shelfari: Book Shelf

I spent the better part of the day getting one area of my life more organised thanks to www.shelfari.com
Now I can say my reading is much more organised. Well at least my reading of books. You see anyone that knows me well knows that I have invested alot of time and money into reading books all the topics I had no clue about or I wanted to get a deeper understanding. Things like Leadership, business, marketing and the list goes on and on. I started out with John C Maxwell's The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership: Follow Them and People Will Follow You. I just wandared in the bookstore and picked up the most interesting book I saw on the topic of leadership. I didn't do much deliberating or research. I just wanted to immerse myself in the area, by getting a perspective from someone else. That book really changed my life and my perceptions of leadership! I found myself with a very good concept of what leadership was all about and being very inspired to learn more.

After I that, I began to purchase more books randomly and read to broaden my horizons. After a while my purchasing far outstripped reading and today I have a situation where I own more books than I have read.
At the start of this year, 2009, I decided it was very important for me to get back into a good reading routine.
I knew that ideally it would be great to have some kind of listing which shows the books I owned and the books that I have read etc. I also decided to make a special effort to blog about the books I have read and share my thoughts with you on my blog on an on-going basis. Help you to decde what is worth reading and what is not.

Shelfari.com does a wonderful job of helping me organise with this "read more" - New Year's Resolution.  It is easy and it is very Web 2.0.
Once you sign up for a profile you can start to add books to your bookshelf which you can fit in under the following categories :-
  • I plan to read
  • I'm reading
  • I've read
  • ****************
  • Favourites
  • Own
  • wishlist
  • ****************
  • Import Books
I basically now have a digital representation of your book shelf so that you can keep track of all the books you own, planning to read etc. It will help me decide what to read next!
And of course being a Web 2.0 solution it will allow me to connect with other people who have also read the book and see what they thought etc. Each book has ratings, a listing of people who read it and comments. Shelfari is just what I was looking for. And I was not even looking for anything!!

I would recommend Shelfari to anyone and encourage our Caribbean Authors and writers to make sure their book is listed on Shelfari!

REVIEW of the Book - The One Minute Entrepreneur

Posted in General & business & productivity & review & personal growth | 01:17

The One Minute Entrepreneur By Ken Blanchard, Don Hutson and Ethan Willis

The One Minute Entrepreneur was an interesting read. It was different from most of the business books I have read as it was told in a story form. It was about Jud's life and his Journey to become and successful entrepeneur. I found this format to be refreshing as it had a slight element of suspense as to what would happen to Jud next. The bigger purpose where the "One Minute Insights" he learned as he journeyed through life. This allowed the book to take a wholistic approach to the idea of being an entrepreneur.
However, if I had to make a comparation to One Minute Manager I would say that One Minute Manager was a more ground breaking book for me personally because of how it was presented. The One Minute Entrepreneur also had its moments are are some of the insights that stood out for me.

Some of the key insights were
  • Associate with people you admire and can learn from.
  • You'll be the same year after year except for the people you meet and the books you read.
  • When you feel moments impacting your destiny, seize the opportunity.
  • On the entrepeneurial path, few people come int your life without a reason.
  • To build a great marriage, especially if you're an entrepreneur, make sure you commit to spending time together outside of meals and sleeping
  • Never let your expenses outstrip your revenue.
  • Don't be a banker for ur customers. Timely collection of invoices is crucial
  • As an entrepreneur, the secret to success is generating CASH, CASH, CASH.
  • Profit is the applause you get for taking care of your customers and creating a motivating environment for your people.
  • Working people today want a partnership relationship, not a top-down hierarchy.
  • Giving can be much more rewarding than receiving.

Overall it was a very refreshing read and also short and sweet. There were some very valueable lessons. One point that also did hit home to me which was not highlighed was hat many persons are married singles because they truly don't get involved with each others passions etc. They simply share a bed and share a table a meal time!

I would recommend that you give it a read!

If you want to purchase the book you can do it here on my Amazon Affliates Store - I actually get a percentage of your purchase, which I can assure you will go along way in me improving my blogging.

L.I.M.E - Cable And Wireless Caribbean Just Evolved

Posted in business & marketing & Mobile Technology & Blackberry & New Media & review | 02:30

Its been on my mind the whole day!
After browsing the new LIME website this morning,my mind has been racing all day.
Don't know what I am talking about?

photo of a lime
Its the "new company", Cable and Wireless is bringing to the people of the Caribbean - L.I.M.E. - Landline Internet Mobile and Entertainment. Its out with the old and in with LIME. Yes, Yes I know Cable and Wireless was not one of our favourite companies in the Caribbean., however they are saying its time for LIME!
I am saying its time for LIME too. What I am seeing from LIME has me rather impressed!

Yeah i heard that!
Yes I heard you whispering under your breathe "Corey is just stop ranting and raving, over nothing. Cable and Wireless will be Cable and Wireless."

Well, Well, Well ... I thought you would have given me more credit! I am not saying I am a fan of Cable and Wireless but you have to give Jack his jacket. Based on what I am seeing and hearing this re-branding goes much deeper than just a name. It looks to me like an evolution. It looks to me like it could be a company that people love. This re-branding doesn't have feel like a "fly by night" or "quick-fix" operation. Its not really a case where you just tell the people something to get them off our backs.
It appears to be a well thought out, cohesive effort to bring real value to the Caribbean people.

Here is something found that  I think might apply. I would say its something written by great man for dramatic effect, but I think I need to "keep it REAL" with you. lol.

Don't get stuck in the rut. You have got to be able to question what you are doing day to day. Pull yourself apart.  Take the time to review and analyze yourself and your environment. Admit honestly and with extreme clarity  your strengths and weaknesses,  successes and failures.Be realistic about your environment.  This is the hardest part coming now. Rebuild yourself from deep down in the foundation. Build yourself into the person you need to be to accomplish your dream. Corey Graham 2.0N

It seemed like Cable and Wireless has gone through this process and are now ready to bring something of real value to the Caribbean people...

"We’ve transformed into a new kind of telecoms company. With a new management structure (populated with the best and brightest people the region has to offer), improved customer service and exciting new products and services, such as our ambitious 3G network roll out, the change we’ve made runs a lot deeper than just our name."

3 G Networks are starting to pop up primarily in the developed world and  LIME is saying they are rolling it out? I am sorry but as a guy who likes my mobile technology and internet, that very, very exciting! Learn more about 3 G. (The main advantage is faster data transfer. i.e. streaming video/tv, video conferencing etc)
Its also my understanding, that the  E(entertainment) in LIME is going to be pretty huge also. We have been hearing the rumours of  IP TV and music downloads for a while now and all these other wonderful things can possibly happen and rather easily. The back bone has been now put in place with this new network, new focus along with the latest consumer technologies (iphoneGoogle's andriod phoneBlackberry StormVOIP & Skype, etc).
Photo of the Blackberry Storm
The stage is set for these rumours to become a reality!
That's what I agree its time 4 LIME.

The time is right. Its now to deliver the goods.

Providing that they do, working online might just become alot more profitable and fulfilling sooner rather than later. The value of online advertising and marketing will greatly increase as more and more Caribbean people get online. Along with the capacity for online tools to deliver the relavant marketing messages to the right people at the right time. As a result we will see that more and more companies large and small investing more time and energy into their online marketing and advertising. This would spark a situation where Caribbean Blogs, communities and other online real estate will grow in value. As they can better deliver the audience advertisers need. There is a world of possibility out there, let your mind wander!

That is one perspective on LIME, let me know what you think? You can share your perspective!

CG 2.0 Reviews New Crop Over Website Ahead of Its Official Launch

Posted in General & soca & soca Monarch & festivals & Corey Graham 2.0 & Barbados & marketing & Blogging & review | 08:11

Early in the morning when ah just wake up.... says Mad Dog in his big tune for Crop Over 2008. Its been mashing up the fetes here so far.

Yesterday morning though, I found myself previewing the official Crop Over website soft launched on a brand new domain www.CropOverBarbados.com.

I know what ya thinking! That's ridiculous Crop over is just over a month away and the site only now launching!! West Indian people boi!
Let me try and save the NCF (National Cultural Foundation) before the public criticisms have them singing " Hard Times hit we, Hard Time hit we, we gine and drink something now."
Its was only after the Barbados General Election on January 15th, that the NCF were once again commissioned the responsibility to  produce Corey Over 2008. I'm going to leave it at that. I not writing ah calypso. This is just a new blog post.

Right so I found myself wearing my "Web 2.0 / Entertainment Blogger hat" looking over the new and improved Crop Over website. The site was engineered and constructed by the same web architect behind this blog and  www.coreykgraham.com. Stan Armstrong of Amitage. Stan is the Man.
In his words,

Honestly, I hope I play my part in enhancing the festival experience to all who the site touches

Overall the site is good, I like the way things have been arranged and alot more information available from the website.
Stan boi, you got real props for  the inclusion of a "festival blog" into the site! As a blogger its good to see that the governing body of a major Caribbean carnival is going to blogging. Yeah i all for that! Blog and wuck up. Hmmm, that sound like a good hook for a Crop 2008 tunes. lol,. right so I am all for the the festival blog. Its a godo way to get information out on the festival and there is the opportunity to build a relationship with Crop Over fans worldwide.
(read my recent post on why start a blog? To learn more the whole notion of blogging).

I think it would be even better if the rss feed has the body or the articles in it, then it will be a winner, well at least in CG 2.0 book,

Before I go on you can to take a look at the old site here - Old CropOver Site

The new site is definitely more eye catching and also easy to use. Most of the info on the site you can get to easily directly from the homepage. The homepage also has a summary of  the latest news, latest photos, latest announcements and even streaming audio of the latest Crop Over tracks. ITs impressive stuff. NCF Launches its own online Radio station? And listen pod for new tracks?
This is interesting though as Bajantube.com now the new hot spot online for anyone wanting to listen to Crop Over 2008 music, in fact BajanTune is boosting of being #1 Bajan website accordiing to Alexa. Check it out here

I don't want to say too much on the actual content. As I understand there is still much to be added, as the site starts to take shape. However based on what I am seeing I am wondering if NCF would be able to keep up getting all these articles, photos and video on the site. Time will tell.
Based on what I am seeing now, the content seems a little bit more of a general entertainment site, than that of a governing body for a festival

  • Media accreditation forms
  • Rules for competitions, application forms for artiste
  • Press Releases
  • Prominent Links directing persons to book tickets and reserve their accommodation

The press releases and media accreditation are the bigest ones for for me, because
you want to get the maximum exposure for the festival.
Having the press releases available on site would make it easier for journalists around to work to write compelling and accurate news articles on the Crop Over Festival.
Having a clear media accreditation process outlined,is an open invitation for media companies to and cover Crop Over 2008. The more media entities that come to cover Crop Over, then the more exposure the festival will get.

All in all the site is looking good do far, with some the fine tuning and more relavant content, I think it will be a bit hit.
